There are proposals to extend the Spires site in High Barnet. Add two floors of shops including a large store. Include a 100 bedroom hotel and replace the parking possibly with less parking!!!!. This will be in competition with New Barnet as both will be  after Next, Miss Selfridge River island Etc

In North Finchley the police garage has proposals for ground floor retail and a multi storey block of flats above.   On the opposite side of the road Furnitureland site is up for a similar very large redevelopment

In Mill Hill East plans are advanced for up to 3,000 new homes

In Colindale the Borough is consulting on 10,000 new homes over and above the present schemes

In Brent cross there is a planning application in for doubling the size of the retail centre, a new town centre, hotel, businesses and 10,000 new homes.

There are the redevelopment proposals for the council estates in Dollis Valley in High Barnet, Graham Park, West Hendon and Stonegrove Park Edgeware.  These will all lead to an increase in housing.

Petrol stations are closing all over the place and being replaced with anything from 12 - 70 flats eg Longmore Avenue, High Road Whetstone, Oakleigh Road South, Russell Lane (soon).

Overall the Borough has plans for 35,000 new homes over the next 10 - 15 years.  This equates to approx 50,000 more cars on our roads

large Victorian and Edwardian houses are being demolished to be replaced with from 4 - 20 flats.
East Barnet school renewal will start over the next 12 months as will JCOSS school

Hello, I have just been reading through whats been written & all, & I certainly do not want to condemn population growth & expansion - thats what we do after-all.... I do find it quite stupid though as cllr. Coleman supports speeding cars & fast lorry's in, what are essentially residential narrow roads.

Is it all over trying to propose traffic calming measures, or a slow-down region?

There seems to be another  application in the pipeline for a Tesco Express in Barnet High Street. The building next to The Old Bull is boarded up and has Tesco adverts on it. It is a Grade 2 listed building and Tesco want to change it somewhat. Permission has not yet been granted.

It would appear to be too late I'm afraid. Tesco put in three planning applications on 29 August 2008 for a Tesco Express store 64-66 High Street Barnet. They all received approval at the Chipping Barnet Planning Committee on 4th March 2009.

http://committeepapers.barnet.gov.uk/democracy/meetings/meetingdetail.asp?meetingid=4631

B/03245/08
Refurbishment of existing shopfronts, installation of an automatic telling machine (ATM), refrigeration condenser unit, three air conditioning units at roof level. New goods lift. Proposed 1.8m security access gate. Associated minor external alterations.

B/03244/08
Externally illuminated fascia and projecting signs, and various non-illuminated graphics vinyls.

B/03246/08
Refurbishment of existing shopfronts, installation of an automatic telling machine (ATM), refrigeration condenser unit, three air conditioning units at roof level. New goods lift. Proposed 1.8m security access gate. Associated minor external alterations. (LISTED BUILDING CONSENT)

There are currently two 'conditions' applications listed on the planning department website (submitted on 18th March 2009)

B/00946/09
Submission of details of condition 3 (Details of External Surfaces of Refurbished Shopfront) pursuant to Planning Permission reference B/03245/08 dated 04/03/2009.

B/00944/09
Submission of details of condition 3 (Details of External Surfaces of Refurbished Shopfront) pursuant to Listed Building Consent reference B/03246/08 dated 04/03/2009.

This is yet another Tesco express.

Lst month at the public enquiry into the Victoria Road New Barnet application for another express the Tesco surveyor said that Tesco currently had 800 Tesco expresses in Britain and had a roll out programme for 400 more every year.   That is 8 new shops every week.  It is Tesco policy to have a a network of their shops so that in a built up area no one was further than 500 metres from a tesco outlet.    We understand they are sniffing around the ex furniture shop (former boat shop) in Greenhill Parade opposite the Odeon

This is total madness and smacks of world domination

£1 of every £8 spent on the High Street is with Tesco.  They are killing off small local businesses and imposing their corporate image on every high street.   There is no room for local character and individuality in their agenda.

All world dominations are stopped eventually.   Lets do our bit by by stopping Tesco from taking over New Barnet

Jan - this is not the promotion of fast moving traffic - he hasn't thought it through that far (though he does like to drive fast in built up areas, judging by his history of endorsements). It's more a knee-jerk response to Daily Mail style media pronouncements that traffic calming is in some way discriminating against drivers.

As a former van driver (with speeding endorsements of my own) I concede that speed-bumps and cameras are a pain in the bum - but it's better than mowing down a child because you find you're late for an appointment. The sound of a car hitting a human is a noise you never forget.

Speed kills.

Public opinion dislikes traffic calming.

Millions of brainless morons can't be wrong - can they?

Or maybe I'm some sort of communist.

Keep fighting the good fight - unpopular isn't always wrong.

.......................and another Tesco Express emerges, this time in Southgate, opposite the old cop shop underneath the newly built flats.

Getting hemmed in on all sides, I think.

Thanks for the info Gin.

The Tesco Express at 42-48 Chase Side Southgate has now been added to the map.

Of the 108 'big name' stores within 6 miles of New Barnet, 29 are Tesco outlets.
